WEST MIDLANDS

Across the West Midlands there are 2,540 scaleups with key clusters in Wholesale/Retail, Manufacturing and Admin & Support Services. There are 1,420 businesses in the scaling pipeline growing between 15-19.99%.

As we assess the development across 2020 in local scaleup dynamics we see an overall slow down in scaleup growth in many localities and continuing regional disparities.

There are 7 LEPs within the West Midlands and over the seven year trend since monitoring began we see on a regional level:

  • The average of the region showed a slight increase from 43.2 in 2013 to 44.8 in 2020 in scaleup density (up 1.6 scaleups per 100k population). By comparison the national average increased by 8.5 scaleups per 100k population during this time period.

More locally we observe:

  • Gloucestershire and Worcestershire are the only two LEPs in the region that track above the national average in 2020.
  • Gloucestershire is one of the top growth LEPs adding 2 scaleups per 100k population per year on average, however this growth has stabilised in recent years.
  • The Marches has had an encouraging journey – starting with the lowest density of scaleups in 2013 and becoming the 4th biggest LEP in the West Midlands, just above the regional average in 2020.
  • Black Country, although ranking last in the region, shows an increasing trend in scaleup density since 2018.

Scaleups are seeking locally focused scaleup support with connectivity to national and international programmes and stakeholders as they grow.

In the following pages we look deeper into two exemplar areas, Worcestershire and Greater Birmingham and Solihull, within the West Midlands highlighting the local dynamics and strategies that have been developed alongside the scaleup support that is available and what impact has been delivered for local scaling businesses.

Further insights on each LEP in the West Midlands can be found in the Annex and a range of public and private programmes supporting scaling businesses in the West Midlands on the scaleup support finder here.
